Volunteer with NPL and give back! Our volunteers work side-by-side with city employees to strengthen NPL's relationship with the local community. Volunteer opportunities include shelving, cleaning toys, attending to computer labs/Maker Spaces, helping patrons, assisting with special events and more!

Who can Volunteer?

We have opportunities available for adults, teens (age 13+), families (age 8+ and volunteering alongside a parent or guardian) and groups, as well as hours required for school.

Community Service: Court-ordered and Pre-Court

We offer court-ordered and pre-court community service opportunities for traffic and criminal cases. All applications are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Please note that community service hours may only be completed at the NPL Admin Offices.

The Norfolk Public Library accepts individuals with misdemeanors in the following categories: 

  • Underage drinking of alcohol
  • Traffic violations such as driving with no insurance, speeding, parking tickets, not paying traffic fines
  • Curfew violations
  • Drug possession
  • Alcohol-related offenses
  • Any other offense deemed acceptable by the Community Engagement Coordinator

The Norfolk Public Library does not accept individuals who have been charged with the following:

  • Violence of any kind, including assault, child abuse, fighting, etc.
  • Sexual charges of any nature, including indecent exposure, etc.
  • Felony drug charges
  • Harassment
  • Arson
  • Trespassing
  • Any other offenses deemed unacceptable by the Community Engagement Coordinator
