Lafayette River

The Lafayette River Watershed is Norfolk's largest and the one area in which we can make the most changes since it only drains from land within Norfolk's city limits. Covering 13.87 square miles, this watershed is home to over 40% of Norfolk's residents. It is tidally influenced by the Elizabeth River.

In 2011, the Lafayette River Restoration Plan (PDF) was announced. This plan was the collaborative efforts of over 30 community, governmental and non-profit organizations commitment to make this waterway swimmable and fishable for everyone to enjoy. The tributary now meets water quality standards for recreational contact and hosts 80 acres of healthy oyster habitat. It is the first Virginia river fully restored for native oyster habitat, but it still remains closed for shellfish harvest as there is more to be done with pollution from urban runoff.
