The Elizabeth River Watershed is 11.08 square miles and is a significant military and commercial port facility for the Hampton Roads area. Touching multiple Hampton Roads cities, this watershed is divided into three (3) branches: main, southern and eastern. Residents and businesses, along with local, state and federal economies, are tied to this waterway and depend on its continued vitality.
In 1983, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) singled out the Elizabeth River as one of the most highly polluted bodies of water in the entire Bay watershed and although improving, it remains on the impaired waters list today. This river's restoration is now up to everyone and with small behavioral changes the Elizabeth River watershed can continue to improve and thrive.
