From May to June the NFK2050 team kicked off the second phase of NFK2050, “Visioning,” with a series of interactive open houses around the City. These open houses included opportunities for residents and stakeholders to provide ideas to improve the City’s housing, economic development, parks, resiliency, transportation, placemaking and more. Each open house included the following stations:
- Intro Station: Project introduction, plan framework, timeline, etc.
- Vision Cards: See what your neighbors have already said in Phase 1, and add your vision for Norfolk in 2050.
- Topic Stations x 4: Station for each of the Plan Pillars (Celebrating Our Community, Growing Equitably, Embracing Nature, Connecting the City) with boards on engagement to date on this topic; main findings from the Existing Conditions document; and open-ended questions asking participants to help us brainstorm ideas to achieve our goals/vision around the topic.
- Map Station: Show us where we most need improvements around the Plan Topic areas (housing, parks, jobs, gathering places, connections). See interactive map below!
- Meeting-in-a-Box and Next Steps: Introduced the MIAB tool and invited participants to “check one out” during Phase 2 for community conversations; Plan Champions flyer/sign-up info.
- Kids’ Area: Coloring sheet and other activities.
From July 9 to September 15, 2024, all activities from the open houses were made available online. Below is a map that reflects what we heard at the mapping station during the Phase 2 open houses, as well as what we heard from the online survey's mapping activity.
