Historic Register: an official list of sites, buildings, districts, and structures that are considered historically significant
Designation: a process that formally identifies a building, site, or area as being historically significant. There are different kinds of historic designations, ranging from listing in the State and National Historic registers with no regulations to local zoning districts that regulate changes to historic areas.
Listing: a formal recognition of a property’s historical significance, typically as being included in a historic register. Designation and listing are often used interchangeably.
