Virginia Landmarks Register & National Register of Historic Places

Listing in a historic register—formal lists identifying historic properties—is one of the most well-known types of historic designation. There are two primary registers that Norfolk resources are listed in: the Virginia Landmarks Register (the State’s historic register program) and the National Register of Historic Places (a nationwide program overseen by National Park Service).

Listing in either of these registers is honorary and carries no specific regulations or restrictions for designated properties. Properties must meet certain standards of integrity (how intact the historic property is) and must convey significant history about broad patterns, people, architecture, or archaeological research. These designations may qualify listed properties for certain grant funding or tax credits.
