Southside Bike Lane Network
Project Benefits
Southside Bicycle & Pedestrian Improvements PDF
The project aims to enhance safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians in the area. It will upgrade the current infrastructure by adding dedicated bike lanes, buffered bike lanes, sharrows, as well as new ADA ramps and crosswalks. These improvements will provide safer and more efficient travel for non-motorized users, fostering a more inclusive transportation network and encouraging sustainable commuting options.
Project Location
Southside (Ward 4, Superward 7): East Indian River Road, State Street, Wilson Road, and Campostella Road.
Scope of Work
The Southside Bicycle & Pedestrian Improvements project involves a range of infrastructure upgrades designed to enhance safety and mobility for cyclists and pedestrians. These include shared lane markings (sharrows), buffered bike lanes that offer cyclists additional space for safety, and dedicated bike lanes with vertical separation to provide a safer, more defined route. The project will also install new ADA ramps and crosswalks at several intersections along Indian River Road, such as Marsh Street, Midland Street, Pike Street, Covel Street, and other important locations, improving pedestrian accessibility.
Project Schedule
- Design Phase: Early Spring 2025
- Public Outreach: Summer/Fall 2025
- Construction Start: Early 2027
Project Funding
The project is funded through a combination of federal sources:
- Regional Surface Transportation Program (RSTP): $1,016,000 for fiscal years 2025/2026.
- SMART Scale Funding: $4,623,000 for fiscal years 2026/2027/2028.
- Total Funding: $5,639,000.
Construction Impact
During construction, temporary lane closures, detours, and altered traffic patterns are expected, particularly along East Indian River Road, State Street, Wilson Road, and Campostella Road. Pedestrians and cyclists may need to use alternate routes around work zones, and drivers should anticipate delays in certain areas. However, these improvements are designed to reduce congestion and enhance safety once completed. Public outreach efforts in Summer/Fall 2025 will provide the community with updates on specific impacts, with additional communication before and during construction to keep everyone informed.
