About Safe Routes to School
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a program that promotes walking and bicycling to school through infrastructure improvements, enforcement, safety education, and incentives to encourage walking and bicycling to school.
The purpose of Safe Routes to School is to:
- Enable and encourage children, including those with disabilities, to walk and bicycle to school
- Make bicycling and walking to school a safer and more appealing transportation alternative
- Facilitate the planning, development, and implementation of projects and activities that will improve safety and reduce traffic
Planning for Safe Routes to School
Increasing the proportion of children walking and biking to school requires communities to be proactive about encouraging walking and biking as a way of getting from place to place. Walking and biking to school benefits both the students and the community in several ways.

Norfolk Public Schools, along with Norfolk's Department of Transportation, is dedicated to creating a safe environment for our children to walk and bike to school. Together, we can ensure that every child enjoys secure routes, promoting both their health and safety.
Information about events for students and safety resources can be found on the Norfolk Public Schools SRTS webpage.
