Be Prepared for the Cold and Snow

During winter, cold temperatures and snow can impact Norfolk. On average, according to the National Weather Service, the City of Norfolk receives 6.2" of snow each winter. However, some winter seasons in the past have brought significantly more snow Hypothermia Warning Signsthan average, or little to no snow. The biggest snowstorm on record for Norfolk was 18.6", which fell Dec 27-28th, 1892.  For many years, we have seen only a trace of snow.

Traffic accidents, fires from improper use of heaters, overexertion, hypothermia, and frostbite are threats posed by winter weather. 

When freezing temperatures or low wind chills are expected, the National Weather Service will issue Extreme Cold Warnings or Cold Weather Advisories. If snow is expected, a Winter Storm Warning or Winter Weather Advisory may be issued. During snow events, you should avoid unnecessary travel.  

As a coastal city, we also face the risk of Nor'easters in the winter months. These storms can produce a combination of winter weather, high winds, and coastal flooding.  These weather events can flood homes and roads,  knock out power, and cause structural damage. It's important to prepare for winter weather-related dangers. There are several steps you can take to stay safe before, during, and after winter storms.

What is a Blizzard? 

Blizzard Warnings are issued for frequent wind gusts greater than or equal to 35 mph accompanied by falling and/or blowing snow, frequently reducing visibility to less than 1/4 mile for three hours or more. A Blizzard Warning means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Avoid travel during a blizzard. While blizzard conditions are rare in Hampton Roads, they have occurred before, most recently in January 2018.
