In 1990, President George H.W. Bush approved the joint resolution extending the week-long recognition begun in 1986 to a month. Prior to that, the Boy Scouts of America honored “First Americans Day” in May in the early 1900s. President Coolidge issued a proclamation on September 28, 1915 which declared the second Saturday of each May as American Indian Day.
