News, Home page Posted on December 24, 2025

From our partners at Old Dominion University

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

Please be advised of an upcoming construction project impacting Lewis Hall and West Olney Road at Old Dominion University’s medical campus. This essential project will replace Lewis Hall's air conditioning system, ensuring a more comfortable environment for all occupants.

To facilitate the safe execution of this project, West Olney Road will be closed to allow for the mobilization and use of a crane. The road closure and project are scheduled to run from January 5, 2026 throughout the Spring 2026 semester.

Closure Details

Road Closure: West Olney Road will be closed throughout the project's duration.

Affected Areas: Pedestrian sidewalks running parallel to West Olney Road and portions of sidewalk on Wagner Road will be closed for public safety.

Access: Drop-off access to the Jones Institute will remain open.

Impact

During the project, enter Lewis Hall through the Edward E. Brickell Medical Sciences Library entrance. The entrances to and exits from Lewis Hall on West Olney Road will be closed during this period. In the event of an emergency, these exits can be used, and pedestrians will follow signage to exit the site through designated construction gates. Emergency exiting construction gates will be positioned at the ends of the sidewalk directly parallel to West Olney Road.

Work Details

The primary scope of work will be conducted on the roof of Lewis Hall, with two of the four air handling units being replaced. While there may be some noise disruption within the building, major noise-producing activities will be confined to the roof.

Safety

We are committed to ensuring the safety of all individuals on campus during this construction period. Please follow all posted signage and instructions from personnel onsite.

We appreciate your understanding and cooperation and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any questions or require further information, please feel free to contact Michael Johnson, Senior Director for Capital Design & Construction, at 757-683-5682 or m2johnso@odu.edu
