NORFOLK, Va. – The Norfolk Environmental Commission, in partnership with Keep Norfolk Beautiful, Friends of Norfolk’s Environment (FONE), and the Sierra Club Chesapeake Bay Group, is proud to present a free film screening and panel discussion of “The Story of Plastic” at the NARO Expanded Cinema on Saturday, Feb. 8.
This Emmy Award-winning documentary offers a searing exposé of the global plastic pollution crisis, revealing the harsh realities of plastic’s life cycle – from fossil fuel extraction to disposal. Unlike other films on this topic, “The Story of Plastic” traces the industry’s decades-long manipulation of the recycling narrative, exposing the false solutions offered to address the issue. With its compelling storytelling and urgent message, the film highlights the critical environmental challenges posed by plastics and the inspiring global resistance working to create change.

The film screening will be followed by a panel discussion centered around the impact of plastic and debris locally and efforts to decrease it. Panelists include Christina Trapani, Executive Director of Clean Virginia Waterways, and Robin Dunbar, Adjunct Instructional Faculty from Old Dominion University School of Public Service.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to engage with local experts and environmental advocates from the City and community about the fight against plastic pollution.
