Flock Alert Leads to Arrest, Conviction of Man for Possessing Stolen Car, Eluding Police
NORFOLK, Va. – Jason Marcus Robinson, 34, was sentenced to serve nearly seven months in jail after he pleaded guilty on Thursday to being in receipt of a stolen vehicle last year and to eluding police officers who were responding to a Flock alert on that stolen vehicle.
On Nov. 24, 2023, a woman reported to police that her 2019 Honda Accord was stolen out of Hampton, and investigators submitted the vehicle information to the Flock license plate recognition system. On the evening of Dec. 16, Norfolk Police officers received a Flock notification that the stolen vehicle was being driven near the intersection of East Tanners Creek Road and Longdale Drive. Officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver, Mr. Robinson, fled from officers until he crashed into a brick wall in the 6400 block of Edward Street.
Mr. Robinson pleaded guilty as charged on Thursday to felony receipt of a stolen vehicle and felony eluding. Judge Joseph C. Lindsey accepted Mr. Robinson’s plea and sentenced him to serve six months and 28 days in custody — the time Mr. Robinson has served in jail leading up to his plea — and suspended the remainder of a four-year prison sentence on the conditions that Mr. Robinson be of uniform good behavior for two years and complete an indeterminate period of supervised probation.
“Once again, the Flock system helped the police arrest the right person in the right place without invading the privacy of innocent people,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “Mr. Robinson was committing a felony by possessing this car. He committed a second and more dangerous one by fleeing and crashing. He is lucky he did not hurt anyone else. We will continue to hold accountable the people committing these crimes while respecting the civil rights of our citizens.”
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Daniel G. Engel prosecuted Mr. Robinson’s case on behalf of the Commonwealth, and Norfolk Police Detective Kevin M. Rose led the investigation.
