Man Convicted of 2 Firearm Felonies, Sentenced to 1 Year After Norfolk Police Found Him in Possession of Stolen Gun
NORFOLK, Va. – Samuel Deangelo Cornick, 40, was sentenced on Monday to serve one year in prison after he pleaded guilty to concealing a stolen firearm and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon.
On Sept. 12, 2023, Norfolk Police officers recognized Mr. Cornick as he walked down B Avenue and knew him to have outstanding warrants out of Chesapeake for his arrest. When the officers stopped Mr. Cornick to arrest him, Mr. Cornick told them he had a gun on his person. Mr. Cornick was searched incident to his arrest, and officers recovered a firearm Mr. Cornick had concealed under the waistband of his underwear. The firearm was later determined to have been reported stolen out of Virginia Beach. Mr. Cornick has prior felony convictions and is prohibited from possessing a firearm.
Mr. Cornick entered a plea agreement on Monday to plead guilty as charged to concealing a stolen firearm as well as being a felon in possession of a firearm, and Mr. Cornick agreed to serve one year in prison with another nine years suspended on the conditions that he complete five years of uniform good behavior and a period of indeterminate supervised probation upon his release. Judge Michelle J. Atkins accepted Mr. Cornick’s plea agreement, found him guilty of the two felonies, and sentenced Mr. Cornick per the agreement.
“Possessing a concealed gun without a permit is a recipe for trouble, and possessing a firearm as a convicted felon is a felony,” said Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi. “We will continue to protect the community by prosecuting those people who possess guns illegally.”
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Anthony J. Comento prosecuted Mr. Cornick’s case on behalf of the Commonwealth, and Norfolk Police Officer Cameron R. Harrell led the investigation.
