Man Sentenced to 2 ½ Years After Being in Possession of Norfolk Resident’s Stolen Car
NORFOLK, Va. — A Norfolk Circuit Court judge sentenced Deshaun Jermaine Ware, 24, on Friday to two and a half years in prison for being in receipt of a stolen car in 2022 and violating his probation for prior offenses.
On the morning of Dec. 8, 2022, a man reported to Norfolk Police that his 2016 Volvo XC60 was stolen from outside his New Street residence. Later that afternoon, an officer noticed the same vehicle being driven erratically near the intersection of Interstate 264 and Newtown Road. The officer conducted a background check on the vehicle, saw that it had been reported stolen, and followed the vehicle into Virginia Beach. With the coordination of Virginia Beach Police, officers conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Birdneck Road and Virginia Beach Boulevard. Mr. Ware, who had been driving, pulled the car over, and he and a passenger attempted to flee on foot from officers.
Doorbell surveillance footage later recovered from the car theft victim’s neighborhood showed Mr. Ware and his passenger attempting to get into cars parked in driveways until successfully driving off in the victim’s car.
On May 30, 2023, Mr. Ware pleaded guilty to receiving stolen goods, and Judge Robert B. Rigney accepted his plea.
On Friday, Judge Rigney sentenced Mr. Ware to one year and six months in prison and suspended an additional one years and six months on the condition that Mr. Ware complete three years of uniform good behavior upon his release. Mr. Ware was also found to be in violation of probation for prior unrelated felonies, and Judge Rigney sentenced him to an additional one year to serve in prison on those priors.
Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Alexander Rosenberg prosecuted Mr. Ware’s case on behalf of the Commonwealth, and Norfolk Police Officer Thomas W. Bowen led the investigation.
