Piggybacking, also known as tailgating, occurs when an unauthorized person follows an authorized person into a restricted area.
It can happen in everyday situations. Holding a door open for someone may result in an unauthorized person entering a restricted area. On elevators, employees use their badges to access certain floors. If an intruder is in the elevator, they can use your privileges to access restricted floors.
Piggybacking can lead to theft, vandalism and stolen intellectual property. You can help prevent it by using the tips below.
Do not hold the door or elevator for those without a visible badge.
Be aware of your surroundings.
If you see something, say something. Report suspicious activity to security.
Direct guests who say they have a meeting to security.
Be aware that thieves and hackers could be disguised as repairmen or delivery people.
