NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Over the past 16 days, detectives say 40 vehicles were stolen in Norfolk and over 50% of those vehicles were left running unattended or had keys that were left inside.
Since January 1, 2018, there have been 40 reports of stolen vehicles in Norfolk, which is an increase of 12 more than last January during the same time-frame.
The best advice in preventing your vehicle from being stolen is NOT to leave vehicle running unattended or leave your keys inside the car. Out of the 40 stolen vehicles this month, 55% of those vehicles had either been left running unattended or had keys left inside the vehicle.
To reduce your chances of becoming a victim of auto theft, police remind everyone to:
• DO NOT leave your vehicle Unattended and Running!
• Lock the doors, and roll up the windows, even if you plan to be away from your car for a short time.
• Do not leave your keys or hide a second set of keys inside your vehicle.
• Park in well-lit areas.
The convenience of a warm car is welcomed during the winter, but it is also an invitation for thieves to steal a vehicle, which can be done in just a matter of seconds. These incidents are crimes of opportunity and can be reduced with help from the community.
Detectives encourage residents not leave their vehicles running unattended whether or not the doors are locked. Even if a car is locked, a window can be broken to gain entry into a running vehicle.
