[ARCHIVED] Norfolk police officer shot, man dead following shooting incident

NORFOLK, Va (NPD) - Norfolk police confirm an officer-involved shooting incident occurred over the holiday weekend, leaving one officer shot and a man dead.

At approximately 11:15 Sunday evening, Norfolk police responded to the 9600 block of 14th Bay Street for reports of a person with a weapon.

When officers arrived on scene, they were advised a man armed with a firearm entered a nearby residence.

As police attempted to make contact with the suspect, the armed man shot an officer standing outside the home.  Officers engaged the suspect and returned fire, striking him. Although officers attempted to administer first aid, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The injured officer was struck in the ballistic vest and transported to a nearby hospital.  He was treated and later released.

The Virginia State Police are investigating the incident.

The officers involved in the shooting incident have been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the investigation.
