NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – The Norfolk Police Department is partnering with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for the upcoming “Click It or Ticket” campaign.
The high-visibility enforcement effort starts this week on Nov. 22 and runs through Nov. 30, coinciding with two exciting events: Grand Illumination and Harbor Half Marathon weekend, and the Thanksgiving holiday - one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
As families hit the road for celebrations and seasonal events, Norfolk Police will be out reminding drivers and passengers to buckle up – every trip, every time.
The campaign aims to reduce preventable injuries and fatalities caused by failure to wear seat belts.
According to NHTSA, in 2023 there were 10,484 unrestrained vehicle occupants killed in crashes nationwide.
Norfolk’s Grand Illumination (Nov. 22) and Norfolk Harbor Half Marathon weekend draws thousands of residents and visitors to our city, while Thanksgiving weekend sees a surge in regional and interstate travel. With increased traffic comes increased risk – and the Norfolk Police Department is committed to keeping roads safe.
During 2025, the City of Norfolk has seen numerous unrestrained occupant crashes resulting in injury or death. According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, there have been 50 reported incidents in the city this year, totaling 98 unrestrained occupant injuries and four deaths due to the lack of wearing a seatbelt.
Whether you’re heading to a holiday dinner, a parade, or just across town this holiday season, make sure everyone in your vehicle is properly buckled.
It’s not just the law – it’s a lifesaving habit.
