Norfolk, Va. (NPD) — As Halloween approaches, the Norfolk Police Department (NPD) is teaming up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind drivers: Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving.
Halloween is a time for costumes, candy, and celebration — but it’s also a time when impaired driving incidents spike.
From 6 p.m. on Oct. 31 to 6 a.m. on Nov. 1, between 2019 and 2023, 198 people were killed nationwide in alcohol-related crashes, according to NHTSA. Of those fatalities, 30 victims were pedestrians.
Whether you’re attending a party, trick-or-treating with family, or enjoying local festivities, make a plan to get home safely.
NHTSA points out some key safety reminders:
- If you feel buzzed, you are not safe to drive. Designate a sober driver or use a rideshare.
- Expect increased enforcement throughout the week. Officers will be on the lookout for impaired drivers.
- Costumes and candy don’t mix with alcohol behind the wheel. Celebrate responsibly.
Driving under the influence can have deadly consequences. Norfolk Police want everyone to enjoy their Halloween, and for everyone to get home safely. It’s as simple as: if you’re drinking, don’t drive.
NPD encourages all residents to plan ahead, look out for one another, and make smart choices. Together, we can ensure a safe and festive Halloween for all.
