[ARCHIVED] MacArthur Memorial to Open New Special Exhibit & Special Lecture

NORFOLK, Va. – On Saturday, Aug. 23, the MacArthur Memorial will open a new 5,000 square foot exhibit and host a special lecture series.

The exhibit, No Turning Back: MacArthur and the Occupation of Japan, 1945 – 1951, tells the story of the most successful occupation in modern history – a masterclass in winning peace after an exceptionally brutal war. No Turning Back will remain on display through 2027. Admission is free.

Finale in the Pacific: The Road to Japan’s Surrender, a FREE half-day lecture series, explores the dramatic final weeks of World War II in the Pacific. Presented in partnership with the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, and the Military Aviation Museum, the program will feature renowned military historians:

  • Richard B. Frank, author of Downfall: The End of the Imperial Japanese Empire
  • D.M. Giangreco, author of Truman and the Bomb: The Untold Story
  • Timothy J. Orr, co-author of Never Call Me a Hero: A Legendary American Dive-Bomber Pilot Remembers the Battle of Midway

These experts will discuss the decision to drop the atomic bomb, the final skirmishes and the surrender ceremony.

Doors open at 9 a.m. for the lecture. Refreshments will be provided. This event is FREE, but registration is required. For more information and to register, visit: https://macarthurmemorial.org/calendar.aspx?EID=358
