[ARCHIVED] Man arrested following weekend shooting at Norfolk State University

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – Norfolk Police have arrested a man following a shooting that happened on the campus of Norfolk State University. 

On April 19th, around 11:30 p.m. Norfolk Police and Norfolk State University Police responded to the 2200 block of Presidential Parkway for the report of a gunshot victim. When officers arrived at the scene, they found two men suffering from gunshot wounds. 

Both men, age 22, were taken to the hospital for treatment and are expected to recover from their injuries. 

Following their investigation, detectives have charged Zakeyis A. Womack, 20, of Ringgold, Virginia. Womack has been charged with two counts of each: malicious wounding, use of a firearm, and shooting in commission of a felony.

Womack was taken into custody in Reidsville, NC in a coordinated effort by members of the U.S. Marshals Service Capital Area Regional Task Force and the North Carolina Regional Task Force. 

Womack is currently being held without bond. 

This tragic act of campus violence exemplifies the level of commitment the Norfolk Police Department has in keeping our promise to deliver justice and provide safety to the community we serve, said Chief Mark Talbot, I sincerely hope the announcement of this arrest reassures the  Norfolk State University community that the threat has ended and they may move away from this academic disruption and complete the semester knowing they are safe. We extend our gratitude to Chief Covington and the men and women of the Norfolk State University Police Department, as well as, the U.S. Marshal Service, for the exceptional assistance they have provided during this investigation. Their efforts have been instrumental in aiding us to effect this arrest so rapidly

Detectives have not released any additional details about this shooting at this time.
