[ARCHIVED] Suspect in custody; Norfolk Police Officer injured following shooting on Arcadia Street

NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – A Norfolk Police Officer has non-life-threatening injuries, and a suspect has sustained life-threatening injuries following a shooting on Arcadia Street Saturday afternoon.

On July 6, 2024, around 3:22 p.m. officers were dispatched to a home in the 3800 block of Arcadia Street to assist Child Protective Services with an investigation.

When police arrived, a woman became combative with the Officers, and while the Officers were engaging with the woman, a male suspect fired shots at the Officers. At which time, Officers discharged their service weapons, and returned fire.

A Norfolk Police Officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds and suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The Officer is expected to recover.

The suspect, a man, was also shot and sustained life-threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital for medical treatment where he remains.

“Today’s shooting is yet another reminder of the dangers that exist in the work that Norfolk Police Officers do each day to keep the city and its residents safe. This afternoon Officers were called upon to resolve a volatile situation that escalated quickly despite significant steps taken by officers to de-escalate, said Chief Mark Talbot. This incident was tragic. But we can all be thankful that it wasn't much worse. The officers did exactly what they were trained to do, which was nothing short of heroic. They put themselves in harm's way so that others would not have to. We are grateful that our Officer who was shot several times will survive his injuries, and we all owe a debt of gratitude for the bravery and professionalism that was shown by all of the officers who were involved.”

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation was requested to respond to the scene and assist with this investigation.

This remains an active and ongoing criminal investigation.

Norfolk Police ask anyone who was in the 3800 block of Arcadia Street at the time of the shooting who may have information that would assist investigators to contact the Norfolk Crime Line or the Virginia State Police.

No other injuries were reported during this incident.

The Officer's family has been notified at the time of this release.

All involved Officers will be placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of this investigation.
