[ARCHIVED] City of Norfolk Seeks Input on Electric Vehicle Use and Charging

Residents and business owners asked to participate in brief survey.

NORFOLK, Va. – Electric Vehicles (EVs) are becoming more common in Norfolk. According to the Kelley Blue Book, a record 1.2 million vehicle buyers chose to go electric in 2023. It’s a trend that’s expected to continue and The City of Norfolk is taking steps to prepare infrastructure that supports a future with more EVs on our roads.

A key component is EV charger access and availability. To ensure infrastructure and implementation is deployed equitably, the City is asking for residents and business owners to complete a brief survey to gauge interest in EVs and preferences as to where charging stations might be installed in the future.

The survey is available at www.norfolk.gov/evsurvey and will be open for comment through July 1. Print surveys are available at all Norfolk Public Library branches.

Survey responses will be included in Norfolk’s EV Infrastructure Deployment Study conducted by Norfolk’s Environmental Sustainability division with a consulting firm, The Cadmus Group. Study results will be incorporated into a plan that will serve as a roadmap to accommodate the anticipated needs of Norfolk residents, businesses and visitors as more choose to transition from conventionally fueled vehicles to EVs.

The plan will include an analysis of the community’s needs, opportunities and challenges, detail strategies for low- and moderate-income neighborhoods, communities with a low ratio of private parking spaces and areas with a high ratio of multi-unit dwellings and single-family homes. The final report will establish a vision, goals and clearly defined roles for the City, the private sector and the community to implement strategies that facilitate increased deployment of EV charging infrastructure across the City of Norfolk in an equitable manner.
