[ARCHIVED] Phishing doesn't only happen over E-mail

Image link to IT Tip: SMSishing

Smishing (SMS phishing) is a form of phishing in which an attacker uses a compelling text message to trick recipients into clicking a link and sending the attacker private information or downloading malicious programs to a phone.

Many users are already aware of the dangers of clicking a link in email messages, but fewer people are aware of the dangers of clicking links in text messages.

If you receive a suspicious text message, follow these steps:

  1. Forward the text to 7726 (SPAM). This helps your wireless provider spot and block similar messages in the future.

  2. Select the number from your call records and block the contact (iPhone, Android).

  3. Delete the text.

  4. (Optional) Report to the FTC : ReportFraud.ftc.gov
