[ARCHIVED] Brinkley Family Memorial Lecture Presents Author Andrew Lawler

Under Jerusalem - The Buried History of the World's Most Contested City

NORFOLK, VA—Slover Library’s Brinkley Family Memorial Lecture Series is known for presenting passionate stories with local impact. The series returns for the second lecture this year on Thursday, Nov. 10, 5:30 – 7:30 p.m., with Author Andrew Lawler discussing his book, Under Jerusalem - The Buried History of the World's Most Contested City.

Lawler is an acclaimed American journalist and author from Norfolk, Virginia, who has written for The New York Times, National Geographic, Science Journal, Archaeology magazine, and other publications. In Under Jerusalem, Lawler takes us into the tombs, tunnels, and trenches of the Holy City—a saga of biblical treasures, intrepid explorers, and political upheaval—and brings to life the characters who have investigated this subterranean landscape.

Since the days when Abraham Lincoln was in the White House, adventurers, archaeologists and religious zealots have flocked to Jerusalem to hunt for buried treasure, unearth sacred artifacts like the Ark of the Covenant and find proof of the Bible’s veracity. That digging to reveal the past continues today—and, in so doing, continues to alter the city’s future.

Join us for the in-person lecture and conversation at Slover Library in Room 605. Admission is free but registration is required. There will also be a reception with cash bar. Visit www.SloverLibrary.com/Brinkley to register.

Slover Library’s Brinkley Family Memorial Lecture Series honors Catherine “Kate” Lee Brinkley, a former librarian at the City of Norfolk’s Kirn Memorial Library, and her son Edward S. Brinkley, Ph.D. (Ned), an author and birding tour guide. Kate loved people and dedicated her work to educating Norfolk residents about the many benefits of the library. Ned wrote a half-dozen books about birds, including the National Wildlife Federation's 2007 Field Guide to the Birds of North America, and his bibliography lists more than 100 other publications. Following Kate's death in 2017, Ned passed away unexpectedly in 2020 while birding in Ecuador.
