NORFOLK,VA. – On September 23, 2020 at 7:00 PM, the MacArthur Memorial will host a virtual event with Dr. John C. McManus, one of the nation’s leading military historians, to discuss his latest book Fire and Fortitude: the U.S. Army in the Pacific War: 1941-1943.
Fire and Fortitude takes readers from Pearl Harbor—a rude awakening for a military woefully unprepared for war—to Makin, a sliver of coral reef where the Army was tested against the increasingly desperate Japanese. In between were nearly two years of punishing combat as the Army transformed, at times unsteadily, from an under-trained garrison force into an unstoppable juggernaut, and America evolved from an inward-looking nation into a global superpower.
A Q&A session will follow the presentation. This virtual event is FREE but registration is required. To register, please visit: www.macarthurmemorial.org.
