[ARCHIVED] MacARTHUR MEMORIAL to Screen Historic Film about African American Military Service

NORFOLK,Va. – To honor the military service of African Americans, the MacArthur Memorial in downtown Norfolk will screen the World War II era documentary film The Negro Soldier (42 mins) on February 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m.

Produced in 1944 by the U.S. Army and famed director Frank Capra, The Negro Soldier highlights the military service of African Americans from the Revolutionary War to World War II. While primarily created to encourage African American support for World War II, the film also presented the nation with an eloquent argument in favor of racial equality. As it played to packed audiences, for the first time moviegoers saw African Americans prominently portrayed as dignified citizens with a proud legacy of making great sacrifices for liberty.

Admission is free but registration is requested.  To register, please call 757-441-2965.  Registration may also be accessed via the Memorial’s website: www.macarthurmemorial.org.
