The Norfolk Police Department has been awarded a $7,000 grant from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justices to ensure that all police units have a Naloxone kit to provide life-saving treatment in an emergency response. This grant will help Norfolk achieve its goal to reduce opioid deaths.

Norfolk Police started training officers in the use of the overdose reversal drug, Narcan, in May 2017.  Since then, officers have administered Narcan 8 times during overdose emergencies, which has resulted in saving lives.

Norfolk Fire-Rescue has used Naloxone for many years when responding to overdose emergencies; the drug is carried on all ambulances, engines and ladders. Fire Fighters have administered Naloxone 244 times in suspected overdosed cases in, and another 180 times in cases by protocol in 2017.

In addition, the Norfolk Community Services Board in partnership with the Norfolk Prevention Coalition provide free REVIVE! Trainings - equipping residents with the knowledge and resources needed to save a family member or friend who has overdosed on opioids.
