NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) – A woman and a child were badly hurt in
a crash Sunday afternoon involving a Naval Support Activity Hampton Roads Fire
and Emergency fire engine.
Around 11:45 a.m., Norfolk first responders were dispatched
to a motor vehicle crash with serious injuries involving a NSA fire engine at
the intersection of Hampton Blvd and Baker Street.
The preliminary investigation has revealed the NSA fire
truck was exiting the fire station at Baker Street with the emergency lights
and sirens activated when an SUV traveling northbound on Hampton Blvd struck
the fire engine.
A woman and 12-year-old child were the only occupants inside
the SUV during the crash. The woman was taken to Sentra Norfolk General Hospital
where she is listed in critical condition. The child was taken was to Children’s
Hospital of the King’s Daughters, where she is being treated for serious injuries.
There were four fire personnel on the engine during the
crash, two of which were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
There were no other vehicles involved. Both north and southbound traffic lanes on
Hampton Blvd at Baker Street are closed while police investigate the crash.
Norfolk Police traffic division is leading the investigation
and have not released any other details pertaining to the crash.
