Frozen and burst water pipes can do serious damage to your home and wallet. Follow these tips to protect your plumbing from cold temperatures.
- Drain and disconnect all outdoor hoses.
- Let water drip from faucets during extremely cold temperatures to prevent pipes from freezing.
- Insulate pipes in unheated areas, such as garages, attics and crawl spaces.
- Install heat tape or heat cable on exposed water pipes or pipes located in areas where the temperature may fall below freezing.
- Seal off vents, doors, windows and cracks.
- Open cabinets and doors to allow heat to reach covered pipes.
- Find the master shutoff valve. In the event that a pipe breaks, shutting off the master water valve can help prevent additional water damage to your home.
- Don’t forget — outdoor irrigation systems should be winterized to protect them from being damaged by freezing temperatures.
