NORFOLK, Va. (NPD) - Detectives with the Norfolk Police Department are searching for a vehicle involved in an evening accident that left a man dead.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Thursday evening, Norfolk police and fire-rescue responded to a motor vehicle accident involving a pedestrian in the 100 block of S. Military Highway.  Medics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene, and the involved vehicle fled from the area before first responders arrived.

The preliminary investigation confirmed the pedestrian attempted to cross the roadway in the 100 block of S. Military Highway, when he was struck by oncoming traffic.

Detectives describe the suspect vehicle as a 2005-2008 Audi sedan, grey or silver in color, with damage to both the front-end and driver sides.  The driver-side mirror is said to be missing.

The pedestrian's identity has not been released, pending notification of his next of kin.  Once the scene is processed, his remains will be transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for determination of exact cause of death.

Police believe several vehicles may have been in the area or passed by the crime scene shortly before or around the time of offense.  Any motorists or community members that may have information about this fatal hit and run are encouraged to contact the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
