Our Mission

The mission of Norfolk’s Information Technology Department is to deliver innovative, program-focused services with an emphasis on accessibility, data quality, security, and customer experience. In pursuit of this mission, we value our staff and encourage their input, make decisions and measure progress based on data, and acknowledge our fiduciary responsibility and civic service.

Our Vision

Norfolk’s Information Technology Department will be a leader known for our advanced resilient technology and services available anywhere and on any device to promote access for employees, citizens, and businesses. This will facilitate data informed decisions within a framework of transparency.  


Programs

Our department is divided into four operational programs.

  • Applications Services is responsible for maintaining, upgrading, supporting, and interfacing business applications used across the City for critical tasks, including financial management, work order/asset management, human resources management, document management, and geographic information systems.


  • Customer Success and Productivity provides training and computer hardware and software support, mobile device support, asset management and licensing, database administration, and project management and planning. 


  • Public Safety Technology Support installs, supports, and maintains technology for Police, Fire, and Emergency Operations. This technology includes radios, emergency communications, and dispatch systems. It also includes applications used for field reporting and incident tracking, as well as those which interface with State and Federal agencies.

 

  • Technology Infrastructure and Cybersecurity is responsible for designing, installing, testing, monitoring, supporting, and maintaining physical network and business operations infrastructure and enterprise cybersecurity systems, as well as cloud services management. This includes network and data telecommunications equipment, video surveillance equipment and management systems, application and database servers, primary and backup storage systems, and telephone and call center systems. It also includes cybersecurity hardware, software, appliances, and systems that monitor and protect network resources and data.

The department is overseen by the Director’s Office which is responsible for leadership and policy. Business Management and Administration supports the business functions of the department including personnel, benefits, payroll, and financial support.
